What is Cosplay?
Cosplay is the short term for “costume play.” It is actually a kind of performance art that entails all the participants to wear costumes that are related to anime, manga, video games, comic book characters, fantasy movie characters, basically anything from the virtual world. Aside from wearing Anime costume, the participants must also play the role they have chosen to portray.
The known origins of Cosplay can be traced back to 1978 ever since anime and manga were receiving rave reviews from the audience. In 1984, Nov Takahashi coined the term “Cosplay” upon seeing the costumes of adoring fans in the Los Angeles Science Fiction Worldcon. In Japanese, Cosplay is also known as “kosupure” which has been derived from the method of abbreviation the Japanese use.

In other countries, cosplay parties and events come in the form of anime and manga conventions. Japan, for one, always holds the Comiket convention twice a year, particularly during winter and summer, in the doujinshi market. Anime costume donned fans gather in the exhibition center for the fun-filled event.
Across the seas, the largest cosplaying event outside Japan is held in California for the annual San Diego Comic-Con. During this event, thousands of anime and manga fans flock to the convention for a fabulous time. This cosplay event is somehow different because western characters are also included such as comic book heroes, animated characters, fantasy characters, and many more. But nevertheless, anime costume in the San Diego Comic-Con never gets out of place.

Choosing The Right Anime Outfit For You
If it’s your first time joining a cosplaying event, you must first decide which character you want to portray and consider the type of cosplaying event you are about to join. Some cosplay conventions are purely geared towards anime and manga fans. If this is the case, you should choose an anime outfit that you feel comfortable in.
Comfort should not only be confined in wearing the anime dress alone, this should also reflect how comfortable you are in playing the role of the character. For this factor alone, you should be able to portray the mannerisms and attitudes of your chosen anime.
Say for example, you have chosen an anime gear for Asuka of the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series. You should be able to portray all of her mannerisms and persona such as being a stubborn girl, a spoilt brat, as well as her sweet and sensitive side which she’s trying to cover up with her “strong” façade.
Both male and female fans are not limited to characterizing the same gender for their anime costumes. Some women dress up like the male anime characters they adore and some men do the same for the female anime they like. This type of “cross-dressing” is actually called crossplaying in the cosplay arena. So go ahead and don’t be afraid to dress up with anime outfits of your favorite anime characters!
Anime
Anime is the cartoon and games animation that has been produced in Japan. It includes any kind of animation whether it is in cartoons, comics or in video games and TV ads. Anime is said to have originated in as early as the 1900s and the Japanese invented new techniques of animation to cut costs and still produce good quality animation.
Earlier animation was achieved through pencil and paper but with the advent of computer technology, anime techniques have improved. In Japan, anime is closely related to Manga, which is the animation used in comic strips. Anime characters have some characteristic body shapes and features. Their eyes are normally portrayed as large with dark eye balls. These large eyes help in displaying different emotions of the characters.
They have different colored hair but mostly they are styled in the form of pointed bangs. Their noses are usually very small. Anime is mostly portrayed as fighting and combat characters. They use different weapons for that purpose. Anime characters have gained a lot of popularity in the world because of their different appearances and styles.
